,> which the inventor proposes to shuvt u man out toa wreck, WHAT LIEL NANT NEWCOMB IS DOING, | Lientenant Neweomb, inspector of this! life saving district, returned yesterday trom ; a tour among the stations, On ‘Tuesday he was at Milwaukee, on Wednesday at} Sheboygan, and on ‘Thursday at ‘Two Rivers, | The crews were examined ‘and drilled and exercised in the boat. He was at Racine on Friday, and took the crew outon the lake during the storm. He was at Kenosha Saturday, and the storm continued, and he took the crew there out in the boat. ‘This drilling and exercising during storms is regarded as ot great benefit to the crews, There were people at Ravine and Kenosha, however, who said “it) was positively dangerous,” and they “thought the boat would be swamped ” Inspector’ Newcomb speaks in terms of praise of the service of Captain St. Peter and h’s crew here in Chicago in going to the schooner Lavinda on Saturday last. ‘They did good work, The Inspector leaves Chicago for the shore to-day visiting St. Joseph first. »He intends to take in the North Manitou.—Jnter-Ocean. STEAMER BURN ED CuaruaM, Ont., Sept. 13.—The sidewheel steamer Queen Victoria was discovered to be on fire about 4 o’elock this morning. When the alarm was given the flames had made such headway that the crew barely es- ecaped with their lives. ‘The fireman was se- verely burned. ‘The steamer was about six miles dewn the river and had been loading wood. ‘lhe engineer, who lives near the wood dock. went home about 9 o’clock last evening. No fire was in the turnace and there were no lights on board at the time of the alarm. ‘The crew suffer much personal loss. Captain Stamour looses $200 in cash, his gold) watch and chain, and o ily escaped in his night clothing. His heroism in arous- ing the crew, and throwing open the win- dows of the state rooms, is the subject of grateful remark. ‘The vessel was ‘insured in the National of Ireland and Caledonia com- panies for $10,000. ‘The origin of the fire is unknown. Various theories have been ad vanced, the most probable of which Is that a spark from the passing barge Manitoba caused the disaster.—Jnter-Ocean, Sept. 14. G. 8. RAND. H, B. BURGER.
