THE MARINE RECORD A TRIP WITH AN ELECTRIC BOA’. On Saturday I went for a trip with the electric boat on the Danube canal. ‘There were about thirty of us, and the excursion wis mort-successful, ‘Nhe boat makes about; six miles against the current, which is very | strong on the canal, (about six miles per hour), and eighteen miles with the stream, giving an average speed of about twelve niles per hour. Seventy-eight Sellon Volck- mar elements supply the current to an ordi- nary Slemens dynamo, which is directly fastened to the shaft carrying the screw. No vibration aud no perceptible noise were to! be noticed on the boat, and the motion was very steady and smooth. It is a pity the Electricdl Power & Storage Company did not set up a water wheel in the Danube ca- | nal to charge their accumulator; it would -have been a very pretty experiment, and certainly successful, as the current is quite strong enough.— Vienna Correspondent Lon- don Times. METHODS OF TESTING BOILERS. It is alleged that the shock of forcing water into a boiler by means of x pump is equal in its effect to a succession of blows which may injure the shell, As every strain put upon the boiler decreages the final strain necessary to produce rupture, it is reasonable to pre- sume that such a method of testing may so injure the parts that they will finally give way under a pressure much less than that at which the boiler was tested. A plan which obviates this is to fill the boiler with cold water and gradually raise the pressure to the desired point by a slow fire. Still another method is to fill the boiler with hot water and then apply the desired pressure by the aid of an injector made for the purpose, which continues to add heated water to the boiler. A relief valve is set to open at the ‘desired pressurz, and the duty of the injector is to maintain that. pressure, uninfluenced Dy any leaks for a given time. A uniform pressure is insured throughout the boiler. THE EVERGLADES OF FLORIDA. The Everglades of Florida, comprising a million acres or more of densely timbered swamps, is said to.be the only absolutely un- knowu region in the United. States. Gov- ‘ernment explorers have never been abie to penetrate the isolated territory and even the land grabbers have failed to enter it. There is conatantly arising from the center of the tract a vast column of smoke, which can be ‘seen from the sea and from the inhabited part of the state, but whether it is burning _timber or a live volcano is purely a matter of speculation. Some years since the New York Herald sent an expedition of discovery into the swamp, but it was driven back by reptiles, mosquitos, and tNalaria. ‘he New ‘Orleans ‘limes-Democrat now proposes to make another attempt, and has organized a vanoe expedition comprising six canoes, manned by four prominent ex-naval and army. officers and eight negroes, who pro- pose to epend several weeks in exploration and surveys in this mysterious land. FISHING FOR MONEY. The girl of the period fishes for the man with lots of “tin”? in the hand or in pros- pect, if he hasn’t enough of common sense to properly seta yellow hen—but all shrewd people who know what good health is and desire to retain it use Swayne’s pills. be- ‘cause they contain no mercury or any other deleterious substances, acting upon the sys- tem like magic. Liver complaint, billious disorders, dropsy, epilepsy, female deranpe- mente, etc., etc., are soon overpowered by their use and the wise ones will take advan- tage of this hint.
