RESCUE OF ‘THE MERRIMAC, ‘The rescue of the barge Merrimac by the tug Torrent, which arrived at 8 o’clock, is one of the best efforts of Captain Chris, Moore’s life. Le left Port Huron Wednes- day night at 10 o’clock and tound the barge fifteen miles off the Canada shore and four miles north of Kincardine. ‘The crew of the Merrimac were in a most pitiable state, not having had a meal or slept any since Sunday morning. ‘They were used up, and upon arriving here the captain of the Merrimac fainted three times from weakness, His crew also deserve the highest praise. On Monday the vessel shifted her cargo so that the rail was under water, and again the same thing happened. Both times all hands trimmed the vessel back. Some of the men gave up when the tug hove in sight. A hawser was passed from the tug to the ves- sel, and after tive hours’ work her vabin was slipped and they started for the west shore. When off Point au Barques the vessel again shitted her cargo, all lights went out on both the vessel and the tug. ‘The vessel was leak- ing while in the seas all hands at the pumps for ten hours, until they got under the land below Sand Beach. She arrived and will go under the clevator to-morrow, . Hev captain and erew tuade a protest at noon and think there is some wet grain in her, ‘To-night the captain gave way from exhaustion. He says that had the ‘Torrent been two hours late she could not have found the Merrimac afloat. ‘This vessel is in the worst shape of any schooner that has come into the river for yerrs. She isa complete mass of ice and drawing sixteen feetof water. ‘The Torrent had bad usage. She is covered with ice and snow, Every dish, table, and chair on her is broken. We see that already the disaster consequent upon the launching of the Daphne is having considerable effect upon the method ot launching, as conducted on the Clyde ship- yards. Strict rules are being exercised in connection with the number of men allowed on board vessels about to be launched, the number being naturally minimised to those who are absolutely necessary for carrying Out the operations. T.oose weights are care- tully removed and made tast, and more im- portant of all, in our view, proper calcula- tions for the stability of the vessels at the estimated launching draught, are now being generally carried out, and where such rules are not entirely new, greater attention is being paid to accuracy. ‘The owners of the Daphne have had most exhaustive and reli- able tests carried out as to her stability with the loaded seagoing condition, and have lately issued specifications for a new vessel, to take the place of the Iris recently lost. The owners ‘are careful to insert. special elauses with regard to the question of stability, the builders being held responsible that the condition of bigh launching and progressive stability, with complete outfit. shall be obtained. ‘The owners further re- quired that the builders will have to test by inclining the stability of the vessel when finished, aud supply the owners with the curve of stability, and the calculation of the same with formule; as also inclined body plans, showing centres of gravity and buoy- ancy and metacentres. ‘This is a most en- couraging result from a lamentable ident, and we hope that, the lesson ia being thoroughly t*ken to heart, viz., that all mechanical or building operations whatso- ever should be reduced to the absolute ac- curacy of mathematical certainty.— Marine Engineer : ee The boilers now most in favor for this use are the horizontal multitubular, externally fired type, set in brickwork. ‘The reasons given are their cheapness in construction, economy of maintenance, and strength for the exceedingly high pressure required in towing against strong currents. ITCHING PILES—SYMPTOMS AND CURE. The symptoms are moisture like perspira- tion, intense itching, particularly at night after getting warm in bed; seems as if pin worms were crawling in and about the rec- tum: the private parts are often affected.
