Monkstown Castle,” by Mrs. Sir Athol came to Vinton Blake, with Barnes; and “Cavs his Kingdom,”? by E. tive pages of pictures by ; Cradle”? by Mrs. Dodge, With a charming illustration by Mary | Hallock Foote; while ‘lhe Rhyme for Twelfth” isa beautifully iMustrated tale of a poem that never was written, “A Duel in a Desert” isa very laughable story, and sois the series of pictures and verses entitled “lhe Well-Read) Hunter.’ Then there isa Christmas play by KE. 8. Brooks, with a full page drawing by R. B. Birch of “Bringing in the Yule Log: and the same artist furnishes the colured Christ- mas frontispiece; there is also a description of a “Children’s Christmas Club,” by Ellas. Sargent; and a good deal besices, forming altogether a rousing Christmas number of over & hundred pages of splendid stories, instructive sketches, beautiful pictures and poems, and tun for everybody, good measure, pressed down, and running over into the number to follow,—evough to give the whole volume a holiday flavor, and still have something left for another year, ———— LOUIS, Speeial Correspondence uf the Marine Record. Sr. Louis, November 17 The upper end of the river is virtually closed, as .far as navigation is concerned. Ice is now running-in the river and for sev- eral days the weather has been very cold. dteamboating from here to points in the lower Mississippi is unimpaired, in fact there is seldom a segson that steamboating is cut oft between here and points below. ‘The Al- ton Packet is still running, though the Ke- okuk boats are all retired. All the rafting steamers coming to this port have retired for the winter. The steamer 8. H. Parisot was destroyed by fire this morning at Bulletts Bayau, eight miles above Natchez. ‘There were no. lives lost. The Parisot left Vicksburg for New Orleans with a cargo of 3,100 bales of cotton, 1,300 sacks of oil cake, and 500 barrels or oil. Loss over $200,000. ‘I'he boat was built ‘by the Howards, of: Louisville, two years ago, and cost $60,000. It was insured for $40,- 000 in St. Louis agencies. ‘The cargo was doubtless insured. J. He H. THE SHOAL. About 5:30 last evening the tugs Sum- mer, .Cuinmings and’ Navagh were seen steaming into the harbor dragging the schooner George C. Finney which they had at last succeeded in getting off the shoal. The work has been very difficult as the schooner filled nearly as fast as the pumps could get the water out. She is now lying at Cook’s coal dock and the pumps were busy on ber this morning. No estimate of the amount of damage can be made at pre- sent. The schooner is badly humped and her bottom in bad condition and the repairs must be very extensive. She will probably be put on Mitchell & Gallagher’s drydock as Goble & Macfarlan’s doek is still occupied by the ‘l'ypo and will be for some weeks. Some lively work was done yesterday ar every one was satistied that if the schooner was left on the shoal another night it would be impossible to remove her. The wind changed, as was expected about 2:30 o’clock this morning and the schooner would un- doubtedly have broken up. The work of getting her off was somewhat impeded yesterday by the fact that the Summer gota THE FINNEY OFF line in her wheel which disabled her for some time.--Osiwego Times, Nov. 22. ——— WHAT WILL CURE ME? Inquires the sufferer who is weary with sick- ness. Is there anything that will ald me in throwing off the bad homors that lurk with- in my system? Our answer is that Swayne’s pills will do you more good than apy medi cine that is made. Not only do they cleanse the bowels, stomach and liver, but’ by their use a feeling of strength takes the place ot weakness, ‘Try them and see if they don’t answer your requirements. peg ee By a law made during the reign of Henry II1., all persous having ten pounds yearly inceme were obliged to be knighted or to pay a fine, Itis said that the original walls ot Lon- don were built by Theodosius, the Roman governor, in 379.
