Scrap parade continues Scrappings, and rumors of scrappings, are likely to be as plentiful in 2016 as they were the previous year. Gone officially are two Canada Steamship Lines vessels, Mapleglen and Birchglen, which sailed to the busy scrapyards at Aliaga, Turkey, under their own power in 2015 and were quickly cut up. The last of Algoma Progress was also torched at Marine Recycling Corp.'s dock at Port Colborne, Ont.,in 2015.The former American Fortitude was also slowly being cut up at the scrapyard as this year began. In late February, Algoma Central announced plans to retire six vessels, including one tanker. Although no names were mentioned, some likely candidates include Algoma Navigator, Algomarine, Peter R. Cresswell and the tanker Algosar. Other vessels reported to be near the end of their careers include Algosoo, Algosteel, Oakglen, Atlantic Erie and Manitoba. Only time will tell wi fate has in store tan such as Algoway and Algorail also entering their sunset years. Algoma Navigator is among the vessels whose days may be numbered.
