SHIPS The self unloader SIERRA has been sold to Columbia Steamship Co. Cargo Carriers, Inc. has awarded a contract to the Christy Corp. of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. for a 291 ft. barge and a 71 ft.tug to be used in the petroleum and molasses transportation between the Lakes and the Seaboard. The cement carrier S.T.CRAPO may be the first ship to clear Detroit this year. It is reported she'll leave on March 15 and arrive at Alpena two days later, St.Patrick's Day. Recalling that the treditional color of this vessel's hull is green, we think the date of arrival very timely. The veteran passenger ship THEODORE ROOSEVELT which has been lying idle for several years has been purchased by the Cream City Wrecking Co., and will be towed to Milwaukee some time this spring for scrapping. (Note: We will describe the ROOSEVELT in the next issue, under "Ships That Never Die." Ed.) Canada Steamship Lines has begun the work of converting their small bulk freighters COLLINGWOOD and MARTIAN ii (ex WILLIAM M.CONNELLY, ex NEPTUNE) into package cerriers. Capt.H.L.Beaton, lately commander of the HURONIC, and before that of the HAMONIC, has been appointed to command the COLLINGWOOD. Thus it appears that earlier rumors concerning the retirement of the HURONIC are being born out (See DMH v.3,no.5). The ASKOT is, to the best of your editor's knowledge, a new ship to the Great Lakes. This line will also charter the more famili- ar Norwegian motorship VIGOR, and will operate its own three freighters, the ERLAND, LAHOLM, and SILJAN. These ships will sail both to Europe and to Caribbean ports. Several larger ocean going freighters of the line will bring pulpwood to Montreal where it will be transshipped to eanallers for delivery in the Great Lakes area. Regular service will again be rendered to Great Lakes ports by the shins of the Swedish Chi- cago Line, the Dutch Oranje Line, and the Fjell Line of Oslo, Norway. Besides these seheduled services by foreign flag ships, there will be a number of trips made by foreign tramp steamers.
