MINNESOTA The Minnesota FLEET Steamship Co. was the carrying cor- poration for the Minnesota Iron Mining Company, organized in the late Eighties by Char- lemagne Tower,Sr. of Philadel- phia, James Pickands and Samuel Mather of Cleveland, and Jay C. Morse of Chicago to mine and market the iron ore from the Vermillion Range in eastern Minnesota. These vessels or- dinarily plied between Two Har- bors, Minn. and lower lake ports. "MW." Their port of Registry was Ashtabula, Ohio. In 1900 the Vermillion mines and the Minnesota Fleet became part of the Federal Steel Co.,a holding company organized by Morgan and Gary. A year later Federal was made a part of U.S.Steel Corp., & the Minnesota vessels became part of the Pittsburgh S.S.Co. Below are the ships of this fleet.
