THE BRITANNIA COMES BACK - ma The McCarthy Steamship Co. is the new owner of the tug BRITAN- NIA, which has operated on the upper lakes for several years in the logging bus- iness. Built at Wyandotte in 1905, BRITANNIA was a familiar sight on the River for’ more than 30 years, as a ferry to Windsor, Belle = neon ss Isle and Bob Lo. ; are Slightly smal- BRITANNIA as cross-river ferry ler than the COLUMBIA and STE.CLAIRE, But originally similar in appearance,she was converted into a tug in 1943. No information as yet regarding her futare use. SHIPS The tanker OTCO NEW YORK recently arrived on the Lakes, via the Mississippi. West Shore Fuel, Inc. of Buffalo will have a new 95 foot tanker, W.H.BENNETT in service soon. Nicholson Transit has pur- chased a twin Diesel engine ship now in an east coast port. This ship's engines will be placed in two Nicholson steamers, and the hull will most probably be used as a lighter here at Detroit. On June 19th the tugs ATOMIC and HELENA towed the passenger steamer MANITOBA past Detroit and on to Hamilton, Ontario, where the big liner will be scrapped. (We will describe this vessel and include a picture of it in the next Marine Hist- orian, under "Ships That Never Die", Ea.) The W.C.RICHARDSON of the Columbia fleet is now in service as a crane- ship. The new passen- ger ship NORGOMA is now in regular service. In early June the big WILFRED SYKES broke the speed record from Super- ior to Indiana Harbor when she carried 17,655 long tons of ore in 54 hours and 35 minutes. The EUGENE W.PARGNY will be equipped with an 8 cylinder ,3570 h.p. Lima- Hamilton Diesel engine next season. Cleveland- Cliffs freighters are now 100% radar equipped > The passenger steamer THEODORE ROOSEVELT has been almost completely scrapped at Milwaukee. WILFRED SYKES McDow Photo
