Whaleback Barge #110, later BADGER and PURE LUBWELL SABINE The Sabine Transportation Co. of Port Arthur, Texas has oper- BARGES ated a fleet of ocean going tankers for many years, while its subsidiary, the Sabine Towing Co. operated tugs in several Gulf harbors. At one time there were a large number of tanker barges in the fleet, and of this total seven were built on the Great Lakes. We ch a description of these herewith: Barge PURE DETONOX, built at Superior, Wisconsin in 1891 as the whaleback barge #118. She sailed the Lakes in the Rockefeller and Pitts- burgh fleets until about 1910, after that on the Atlantic seaboard. Her later names were BOSTON, FREEPORT SULPHUR #3, PURE OIL #9, and after her acquisition by Sabine, about 1930, PURE DETONOX. Serapped at Port Arthur, 1946. Barge PURE LUBWELL, built at Syperior in 1891 as whaleback barge #110. Operated on the Lakes in the Rockefeller, Pittsburghm ahd Boutell Fleets, and was renamed BADGER, about 1904. Destroyed by fire at New Orleans, gis March 23, 1932. e PURE NULUBE, pullt at Syperior in 1893, as whaleback barge #131. Sole out of Pittsburgh Fleet about 1910, and cperaced afterward on coast, under successive names, SALEM, FREEPORT SULPHUR #4, PURE OIL #10, and as PURE NULUBE after 1929. Scrapped at Port Arthur, 1946. Barge PURE SHERELL, built at Toledo, Ohio, in 1916 as the auxiliary tanker SUNLITE, for coastwise Preise A,quired by Sabine in 1930 and renamed PURE SHERILL, and sold in 1947. Now the SAN GABRIEL of Houston. Barge PURE TIOLENE, built at Superior in 1891 as the whaleback barge #116. Acquired about 1903 by Boutell Steel Barge Co. of Bay City and Cannas BRITANNIA. Sailed on New England coast for many years until Sabine acquired her in late Twenties. Scrapped at Port Arthur, 1946. Barge PURE VAN, built at Ashtabula in 1912 as the canal size freight steamer GEORGE HAWLEY. This vessel operated mostly on the coast and sometime later was lengthened to 304' and renamed GENE CRAWLEY. She was renamed PURE VAN in the Sabine Fleet, about 1930, at which time her engines were removed and she was converted for pelroleum carrying. Barge PURE WOFFORD, built at Toledo in 1916 as the auxiliary tank- er DAWNLITE. Owned originally by Standard of New Jersey, and later by P,cific Steamship Co. In the Sabine fleet from 1930 to 1947. She is now the barge SAN CARLOS of Houston. These barges and their salt water built sisters usually were towed by Sabine tugs in the oil trade between various Texas ports and New Orleans and Mobile. According to their ownars they rendered good mervioe for nearly two decades, before they gave plave to more modern craft.
