There will be the usual picnic on the Museum grounds, prior to the meeting. You are to bring your own lunch, coffee, etc. The meeting will gather in the auditorium at 8 P.M.Eastern Standard Time. Our speaker of the evening will be the winner of the International Tugboat Race, Captain J.Earl McQueen of Amherstburg. All who are familiar with ship history around the Detroit River know Captain McQueen. He will tell us some of his experiences in tugboat work and salvaging. This promises to be an outstanding opening of an outstanding year. Our October meeting will be held on the evening of the 18th, Wednesday, in the Conference Room of the Detroit News Building, 615 W.Lafeyette. The feature will be kodachrome movies and description of an Atlantic voyage, to be shown by Mr.Thomas B.Moore of Detroit. Plan now to attend both meetings, and invite your friends. Me ORR, SE EO A a oR a a ae eae oe aoe oe ae FE ke NEW The former CRESCENT CITY of the Browning Line has been renamed NAMES CARL W.MEYERS, and is now equipped with radar. This ship is the last of the famous "City Line" freighters to be renamed. Besides the CRESCENT CITY there were the EMPIRE CITY, now the SUMATRA, SUPERIOR CITY, lost in 1920, QUEEN CITY and ZENITH CIty, serapped in 1946. The vessels were built in the late 90's for the old U.S.Steel Fleet, and became part of the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. in 1901. The Canadian tankers OAKBRANCH (ex MAPLEHILL, ex HADDINGTON) and WILLOW- BRANCH (ex ROSEMOUNT,ii, ex SASKATOON, 1) have been renamed respectively, BASINGBROOK and BASINGCREEK, and are owned by the English firm, the Basinghall Sutpping Co.,Ltd. The MAPLETON, now on salt water is called EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN, while the ANTICOSTI (ex GLENCLOVA) is now the RISACUA. the i locally operated barge SANDCRAFT,ii, is the former OCONTO TRADER. SHIERSLIFFE HALL is the name of the newest canaller of the Hall Fleet. The vessel was built bg Vickers of Canada this spring. The new diesel tanker WILLOWBRANCH was built at Sorel by the Marine Industries, Ltd., for their own fleet.
