SHIPS A new passenger ferry is under construction at the Yards of the Toronto Dry Dock Co. for the Toronto Transportation Commission. This vessel, to be named THOMAS RENNIE, will be a diesel driven double ender, with a capacity of 1000 people. The former Americam motor- g ship ALDEN BARNES FIERTZ (ex I.L.I.#104) has been acquired by the Canadi- an Coastal Carriers, Ltd., and will be converted into a tanker, after very extensive rebuild. The vessel is to be cut in two lengthwise and widened by 7 feet, as well as being built up three feet higher. When this is completed, the ship will bear the name COASTAL CARRIER, and will oper- ate in the Lakes, canal and coast petroleum trade. The Newfoundland- Great Lakes S.S.Co. has chartered the SPRINGDALE and SPRINGTIDE from the Springwell Shipping Co. of London, Eneland. These steam driven canal size ships, resemble the old "stemwinders" of World War I. They were built at Sunderland in 1937. The veteran tug AMERICA successfully passed trials after conversion to diesel drive. She will be used for long distance towing, A new organization, Matine Fueling, Inc., will service freighters at the port of Indiana Harbor, and will operate the barge fuel lighter MARINE NO.1, and the 300 h.p.diesel tug FUEL KING. Fjell Line sent a chartered vessel, the CYGNUS, into the Lakes recently. The ISHPHEMING and LaSALLE (ex F.A. BAILEY, ex J.H.SHEADLE,i), of the Cliffs Fleet are to be made into ‘oil burners this winter, at the Rouge yards. LACKAWANNA (ex EDWIN E SLICK,ex DANIEL B.MEACHAM) and LEBANON (ex EFFINGHAM B.MORRIS, ex JOSIAH G. MUNRO ) of Bethlehem are to have new tank tops installed at ‘Ashte- bula. The E.J.KULAS (ex WILLIAM C.ATWATER) of the Wilson Line will re- ceive new boilers and Skinner engines at Rouge. The Kinsman freighter HARRY L,FINDLAY (ex MATTHEW ANDREWS) will have side tanks and sliding hatch tops replaced at Sturgeon Bay. The ice breaker MACKINAW refueled early this month, taking on 245,000 gallons of 6il. This was but her sec- ond fueling this saason. The COLUMBIA of the Bob Lo Line will get a new propellor at Toledo. The "G" tug OKLAHOMA (ex T.C.LUTZ) will be conver- eG ted to diesel drive soon, at Cleveland. After lying idle at Norfolk,Va. for several years, the sandsucker WESTON M.CARROLL (ex GABINO,ex SERPENT- INE, ex CHARLES S.NEFF) (See DMH, v.3,no.5) has been reconditioned and will soon go back into service with Breille, New Jersey, as her home port. She will replace the recently sunk SANDC RAFT i (ex LAKE CLEAR). The new PATERSON motorship HUMBERDOC, named for the town of Humberstone, on the Welland Canal, was formerly named NORFOLK.
