Mr.Lee Miller of Put- In-Bay is owner of the Miller Boat Line, which operates the very modern motorships SOUTH SHORE and WEST SHORE in the pass- enger and auto ferry service bet- ween Catawba, Middle Bass and Put- In-Bay, and the AVON on cruises and charter parties. His water taxi service at Put In Bay is popular with yachtsmen, expecially during the annual Interlake Re- gata, where, day or night, the call "Mill-are" will bring prompt service. Mr.Henry Caulkins of Detroit is managing owner of the Waterways Navigation Co.,whose freighter RALPH S.CAULKINS has made a lot of marine history in these parts. The ship was built in 1902 as the J.M. JENKS for the Acme Transit Co., a division of the 01d Hawgood Fleet, (See DMH, v.3,no.2). After 1916 she was in the Pittsburgh Fleet as the R.R.RICHARDSON. In all, there have been five large carriers in this line. The WILLIAM P.SNYDER (now the ELTON HOYT II) 550 x 26 and the WILPEN (now the DAVID P.THOMPSON) 575 x 58, came out in 1906. Three years later the SHENANGO, 605 x 58, was added. The next two, of dimensions, 617 x 64, were the’ largest on the Lakes for more than a decade. They were the COL.JAMES M.SCHOONMAKER and WILLIAM P.SNYDER,JR. These ships have green hulis, white cabins, black stacks with red and white diamond, The SHENANGO (& J.BURTON AYRES) unloading at Edgewater Park, Cleveland.
