SHIPS The motorship ERIE ISLE (third of that name) was luanched at Cleveland on August 20th. The 64 ft. ship will operate out of Port Clinton, to Middle Bass and Put In Bay. The converted C-4 freighter TOM M.GIRDLER has successfully negotiated the Mississippi River and the Illinois Waterway, and is nearing completion at the South Chicago shipyard The tug JOBN ROEN (ex Lamont) recently purchased by Great Lakes Towing Co.} and now being converted to diesel, will be renamed SAMUEL A BOOL. It will receive a 1600 h.p. emgine, and will bu used for "out" towing. The most recent addition to the Roen fleet of tugs is JOHN ROEN V, a diesel driven rebuild of the former U.S.Engineers' steam tug CUMBERLAND. The names of the three new Pittsburghers under construction will be ARTHUR M.ANDERSON, CASON J.CALLAWAY, and PHILIP D.CLARKE. The new Interlake freighter now nearing completion at Sparrows' Point, Md. will be ELTON HOYT II, while the present ELTON HOYT II will be renamed ALEX D.CHISHOLM. The other Interlake ship, now on the ways at the Rouge will be called J.L.MAUTHE. Both new units are expected to slide down the ways in January. The new Bradley self-unload er willbe named JOHN G.MUNSON, and the present ship of that name will be renamed IRKIN L.CLYMER. The tug BARKHAMSTEAD has been stripped down to the hull. Confliéting rumors indicate three possible alternatives for her fu- ture, complete scrapping, conversion to a barge, conversion to diesel drive. The two C-4 ships which will follow the GIRDLER into the Browning Fleet will be named TROY H.BROWNING and CHARLES M.WHITE. A former U.S.Navy LCM has been rebuilt by the Tower Welding Co. of Cleveland to do repair work in Cleveland harbor and has been renamed THE TOWER. Rumors state that the red ball mark on the stacks of the river car ferries of the Pere Marquette Division of the C.& O.Ry. will be replaced by a yellow disc with blue monogram "C.& 0." soon. The line's Lake Michigan car ferries underwent this change of stack marking two seasons ago. C.& O. also plans to replace boilers in the ferries PERE MARQUETTE 21 and 22, and possibly add 40 feet to their length, depending on costs. Bids will be opened on October 2nd. | Through the efforts of Capt. Misener, the Toronto tug H.J.DIXON (ex ARKAN. SAS, ex ABNER C.HARDING) has been placed at Port Colborne for a month, to determine whether there is sufficient business there to warraht the permanen’ location of a tug. Capt.M.J.Bishop has been appointed fleet captain for the Mackinac Transportation Co., operators of the car ferries CHIEF WAWATAM and SAINTE MARIE. Another new unit for the Hamburg-Chicago Line, the motor- ship DESDEMONA, was recently launched at Hamburg. When the NORMAN B REAM grounded recently in Lake St.Clair, her cargo was removed by the cranes of the G.G.POST and placed in the hold of the WILLIAM EDENBORN. The unique operation was performed while the three ships were lashed together with the POST in the middle. Both the POST and the EDENBORN had interesting past experiences. Some years ago the POST was carrying a deck load of automo- biles, when a hail storm did close to $100,000 damage to her cargo. The big COVERDALE established |= ; a fleet record for C. ‘ S.L. when she brought 18.330 tons of ore to Ashtabula. The latest effort of the WILFRED SYKES is a haul of 20.406 tons of ore from Lake Superior to Indiana Harbor.
