MUTUAL OF This fleet was ESCANABA organized in the late 80's to carry ore from the Menominee Range to lower lake ports. The CAMBRIA (later LAKELAND) was one of the early steel bulk freighters, coming out in 1887. This ship was about 280 ft long. Her larger sis- ter ships CORONA (later PAI- POONGE) and CORSICA followed a year later. All were pro- ducts of the Globe Yards in Cleveland. The CORALIA, 412 x 48, was the largest carrier on the Lakes when completed in 1896. When first in ser- vice the CAMBRIA carried three masts, the CORONA and CORSICA four, and the CORALIA three. The CORSICA The Mutual Transportation Co. colors were: black hull with white stripe, dark red cabins, and black stack with white globe. M.A.Hanna Co. were the managers and operators of these four vessels until 1901, when they became part of the Pittsburgh fleet. The CORALIA, now the T.H.BROWNING, is the only survivor of this fleet. Northern Steamship Co. (Great Northern & Northern Pacific Rys.), Minneapolis, St.Paul & Buffalo S.S.Co. (Soo Ry.) and Lake Transit Co. (Lackawanna Ry.) The 16 steel package freighters of the group are listed by fleets herewith: Northern Steamship Co. - six identical ships, built in 1888 & 1889, 290 ft in langth, NOR STAR, NORTH WIND, NORTHERN KING, NORTHERN LIGHT, NORTHERN QUEEN, NORTHERN WAVE. Of this group the NORTH STAR Foundered on Lake Erie in 1909. Three 370 footers were added in 1910, RTH LAKE (later J.E.GORMAN), NORTH SEA (later EDWARD CHAMBERS) and new NORTH STAR (later H.A.SCANDRETT). Northern S.S+ also chartered MINNETONKA ernaine 1893, 345 ft. from Chicago & Duluth Trans Co. Lake Transit Co.- Si TON & LACKAWANNA, 260 ft.,1888. Soo Line.- The NORTH WIND four full canallers, , 260 x 43, built in 1897, *& 1898, HURON, MINNEA- POLIS, WM. CASTLE RHODES, and ST. PAUL. The Mutual Transit colors were black hull and stack and white cabins.
