FLEET Four years prior to that year three citizens of New Lisbon, Ohio Hiram Garretson, Dr.Leonard C.Hanna and Robert Hanna moved to Cleveland and went into the merchandise and ship brokerage business. Hanna, Garretson & Co built their first ship, the twin screw CITY OF SUPERIOR in 1857. This vessel was wrecked in the same year, but another large vessel, the NORTHERN LIGHT was immediately built. In 1865 the large Ward propellor(@) LAC LA BELLE was added to the line. During these early years many ships were chartered, of which we do not have record now. Since the Hanna interest: were managing operators for many other ships than those owned by them, it is difficult to list all the ships controlled by Hanna, Garretson,or its successor M.A.Hanna & Co. However ,we have a fairly complete list herewith. After hhe death of Dr.Hanna, his sons, Marcus A., Howard M., and Leonard,Jr. operated the line. The present M.A.Hanna Co. is a division of the National Steel Corporation. Below are the names of ships owned or operated by the Hanne interests. Hanna,Garretson & Co. 187i, Str.
