SHIPS PEERLESS - - THAT Wooden propel- NEVER lor, built in DIE 1872 at Cleve- (#34) land by Ira franier for Leopold & Austrian's Lake Superior Line, Chicago to Duluth. Dimensions, 211 x 40 x 12., 1199 gross, 912 net tons. Had two stacks, crosswise, and one mast. One of the finest and most beau- tiful ships in her day in the passenger ser- vice. The main saloon was 166' ft.long and was without obstructi- on, decorated in fine taste. In 1879 Leo- pold's Line merged with Spencer's to form Lake Michigan & Lake Superior Trans.Co. Other noteworthy ships of this line were CITY OF TRAVERSE, CITY OF DULUTH, JAY GOULD, OSCEOLA, and the steel MaNI TOU, built in 1892 (DME v.2,no.8). In the early 1900's the older vessels were sold, the line retaining only MANITOU. PEERLESS then ran from Chicago to Mil- waukee, around 1906, and to Muskegon in 1907 (See illustration). Cut down to a freighter with one stack in late 1908, she failed to earn, and was tried as a sandsucker in 1910, but again with no success. Badly burned at Michigan chy 10-6-'10, she was abandoned. But she had made a solid reputation in 33 years in the passenger trade.
