Volume 6, No.3 November, 1952 xe kK K ANNOUNCEMENT: As your Secretary has already informed you by postcard, this num- ber of the MARINE HISTORIAN is reaching you late, due to your Editor's pro- tracted stay in the hsopital- However, to keep your records straight we are making this number up inthe regular form, with only one change, namely that at povences meeting is described here in past tense, rather than the asual uture tense. On Wednesday evening, November 19th, our Society was privileged to hear a fine talk by one of our senior members, Mr.Darrel J.Butterfield, who told us the story of the passenger ships of the Port Huron - to - Cleve- land area, since 1890. There were many interesting tales and anecdotes of the o1a liners, which were once the queens of the Lakes and our River. We are grateful to Mr.Butterfield for presenting us with a fine evening's program. On Wednesday, December 17th, our Society will present another of its illustrated programs. These have always been popular, so keep this date in mind. It will begin at 8:00 P.M., in the usual place, the small audito- rium in the Library Building at the University of Detroit. Remember that our first meeting for the year 1953 will be held at the same time and place on the evening of January 21st. Mr.Norbert Neff will be the speaker. Mark this date on your calendar now. Thanks to all. ee RK KK KK KKK KOK KK KK KKK KK KK KK KK KK KK KE KK KK K SHIPS Capt Becker reports that the former Walkerville Ferry WAYNE is being taken down the Mississippi and will become a ferry between New Orleans and Algiers, La. Capt Frank also informs us that the hull of the freighter SPARTA (ex FRANK W.HART) os being converted into a floating drydock at S,urgeon Bay. The SPARTA was stranded in Lake ees in 1940 and was salvaged by Capt.Roen and taken to Sturgeon Bay, where it has lain idle since. American Sféamship Co. of Buffalo (Boland & Cornelius) has awarded a contract to the Manitowoc Shipbuidling Co. for a 605 ft. self undoader, to be delivered for the season of 1954.
