replaced the former pair, a grain elevator was built on deck and equipment installed for drying wet grain. (See illustration at left.) On Sept.17,1918, while bound light from Buffalo to Toledo, under sommand of Capt.Shea, HELENA stranded on Hen and Chicken Reef, near the Sister Islands in Lake Erie. The Great Lakes Towing Co., was given the job of salvag- ing the steamer but af- ter working for ten days without success, they gave up the job. Clarence LaBeau, Toledo wrecking contractor, then took over and was successful in refloating the steamer. She was taken to Toledo and placed in Drydock where it was found that her back was broken. LaBeau was given the vessel for his services. The triple expansion engine, built by Samuel F.Hodge of Detroit for the HELENA was taken out and sold to Mr. W.H.Becker of Cleveland and used to replace the wrecked engine of the Str. R.W.ENGLAND (later FRANK SEITHER, later FONTANA). The bare hull of the HELENA was then taken to the foot of Ash Street, Toledo, filled with earth and became a dock. William A.McDonald.
