WAUKETA - steel excursion ship built by Toleso Shipbuilding Co. in 1909 for the White Star Line of Detroit for day excur- sions to Port Huron & Toledo. Single screw drive. Dimen- sions 190 o.a. x 38 x 14. For two decades she served her first owners, usually run- ning opposite TASHMOO on the river trip to Port Huron. In the early '30s she was sold to the Meseck Towing Co. of New —— Gity and used for cruises o the Hudson, East River, and Lower Bay, along with AMBRIGANA, formerly of Buf- falo, which was also acquired by Meseck at that time. Still later WAUKETA wen to Hampton Roads, Va. to perform ferry service for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway between Newport News and Norfolk. Our illustration shows WAUKETA a+ full speed on Hampton Roads, October 30, 1949. In 1951 C.& 0. abandoned thew ferry service in favor of busses running over the James River Bridge.
