SHIPS HENRY CORT - Whale- THAT back #125, steel bulk NEVER freighter, built in DIE 1892 by McDougall's (#43) American Steel Barge Company at West Sup- erior. Dimensions 320 x 42 x 25, 2234 gross, 1571 net tons. 3500 tons capacity. Originally named PILLSBUR and first operated in con- nection with the Pillsbury Flour Mills Compny of Min- neapolis. Sister vessel was WASHBURN (later JAMES B.NEIL- SON & J.T.REID). In 1895 the two vessels were acquired by Rockefeller's Bessemer Steamship Company and renamed. In 1901 the vessel again changed hands when all the ships of the Bessemer Fleet went into the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. From 1901 to 1917 the HENRY CORT sailed without incident. However in the summer of 1901 fate took a hand in her affairs and she was sunk in a collision. Although raised soon, she was not immediately repaired due to a lack of shipyard facilities during the building rush of the first War. When by 1919 she was ready to sail again she had been completely rebuilt and had her appearance changed by having her main deck raised four feet and by the addition of new and larger cabins. In the spring of 1927 she was engaged in ice breaking operations in Lake Erie when she stitanded on Colchester Shoal. She was abandoned to the underwriters who salvaged her and sold her to the Lake Ports Shipping & Navigation Co. of Detroit. In this, her second rebuild, her appearance was further enhanced by the addition of two whirlie cranes on her main deck. Early in the season of 1933 she left Detroit downbound with a load of steel but wes holed by ice a forced to return. As she approached Nicholson's dock in Ecorse she settled. ™ Though raised again, her days were numbered. While trying to negotiage the piemheads at Muskegon during a heavy gale on December 1, 1934 she struck the north breakwall and again sunk. All on board were rescued, but the veteran ship was considered damaged beyond repair and was abandoned. Thus one of the last of the whalebacks was removed, a rare sight in her day, and even rarer today. Milton J.Brown.
