Poole, Secretary 8236 Ford Ave., Van Dyke, Michigan Volume 7, No. 2 October, 1953 Rev. Edward J. Dowling, S. J., Editor University of Detroit, Detroit 21, Mich. ANNOUNCEMENT: Our first regular meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, October 28, at 8:00, in the small auditorium, Room 31l, of the University of Detroit Library on the campus at McNichols Road at Livernois. There are good parking facilities in the south lots near the Engineering Building and the Tower. The best D.S.R. service in the evening hours from downtown is the Dexter bus. Our speaker will be Mr. Fred W. Dutton of Cleveland. Though a rail- road man by professional occupation, he is Chief Clerk in the Legal Department of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway; he is also a part-time Great Lakes sailor. Since his boyhood days in Marquette, Michigan, where his father had charge of a small fleet, he has been keenly interested in ships. He sailed for the Wwirst time as a deckhand in 1916. Since then he has been on the lake vessels regularly during summer vacations, and has, meanwhile, qualified as a wheels- man. In this wise, he has come to spend his summer vacations in the pilot houses of some of the biggest ships on the Great Lakes. He is pretty much the unofficial historian of the ships of the Pere Marquette and C. & 0. fleets. Fred has been active in the Great Lakes Historical Society and is currently its Treasurer. For some years back he has been a reliable assistant to our Society as Cleveland correspondent for the "Marine Historian". He will tell us about his experiences aboard many of the well-known freighters. Come early, and invite your friends. On November 25, we will have another of our illustrated programs. In past years these have always been popular and well attended - - so, mark this date now and plan on being with us then. A second edition of our publication, "Ships That Never Die", has been delivered by the printers. At the forthcoming meeting, Ken Smith will have a supply on hand. The price is $1.25. Likewise, those desiring to obtain back numbers of the “Marine Historian" should contact Mr. Smith (153 Monterey, Highland Park, 3). Back numbers, either in original or reprint form, are available for nearly all issues at ten cents apiece. If you order by mail, please itemize accurately by volume, number, month and year. At the next meeting, Ken will also have a good selection of photographs for sale of old and new coastwise or "down east" ships, for those of us who are interested fm ships from this area.
