SHIPS MAJESTIC - THAT wooden pas- NEVER senger and DIE freight pro- (#48) peller, built in 1895 at Collingwood as the flagship of the Great ent Transit Co. (The “White Line"). 1,073 tons, dimensions, 209 x 35 x 12.6. Two masts and one stack. Interior decorations in elegant Victoria and Albert style. Hull originally all white (hence the name "White Line"), cabins white, stack black with broad white band. In 1899 The Great Northern Line, her rival, The North Shore Transit Co. ("Black Line"), and the Beatty Line of Sarnia were merged to form the Northern Navigation Co. As part of the new fleet MAJESTIC was painted as shown in our illustration: black hull to main deck rail, white cabins and red lower stack with black top over narrow white band. MAJESTIC operated first for N.N. on the Sarnia, Lakehead and Duluth, line. When newer ships entered the fleet she sailed in the Georgian Bay-Mackinac service. This fine old timer was destroyed by fire while in winter quarters at Point Edward, Decemiy, 15, 1915. Her burning hulk drifted against the SARONIC (ex UNITED EMPIRE) an set her afire too (See DMH, vol. 5, no. 9). The latter was rebuilt as a barg put eee nag wes a total loss. W. R.
