ANNOUNCEMENT: Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday Evening, January 13, at Eight at the U.of D.Library, Room 311. As we announced last issue our speaker will be Capt.Thomas Allen, commander of the freighter WILLIAM EDEN- BORN during the past season, and previously commander of the ROBERT W.E. BUNSEN. Those of us who know Captain Tom and have heard his stories and fe his experiences recommend your marking this meeting as another "must." Do not forget the date, Wednesday, January 13th. Our members are cautioned to have their membership cards on their person if they drive to the University, thus precluding being stopped for parking charges in the event of their being a basketball game or similar gathering in the Field House on that night. The Star Line operated excursions on the River before the days of the White Star Line, and numbered besides the COLE, the IDLEWILD, the first GREYHOUND, the EVENING STAR, and the propellor ARUNDELL. Our fellow member,George Lauhoff,contributed this and several more fine cuts which we will see in future issues. The 647 ft.ARTHUR M,ANDERSON established a season's record for a single vessel when hauled 866, 885 gross tons of iron ore for the Pittsburgh Steamship Diwision during the past season. She made 46 round trips. The car ferry PERE MAR- QUETTE 12, has gone to Port Hyron to reopen train ferry service across the St.Clair River from Port Huron to Sarnia, the route for which this vessel was originally built, but which has not been used for many years meanwhile. The German freighter WALLSCHIFF has been ragsed from the St.Clair River and brought to the shipyards at River Rouge for repairs. The PHILIP D.BLOCK is at Manitowoc for installation of new tank tops, side tanks and pilot house. The Canadian Pacific passenger liner ASSINIBOIA is at the Midland yards for installation of oil burners in her boilers. Her sister KEEWATIN will get a similar change next winter. Fairport Harbor will have five Columbia boats in for winter work: new channel tank top on HARRY T.EWIG, new stokers on R.E.
