SHIPS THAT NEVER DIE (#52) - = ery built in Aveta two days by t. erican Shisbutiding Co., in 1906. She was christened the J.Q-RIDDLE for the Commonwealth Steam- ship Co., a division of the Hawgood Fleet (DMH,v.3,no.2). The vessel has an over- ant length of 552', beam 56', and depth 31'. Her Anerioan registry number is 203377. In 1916 the J.Q.RIDDLE was sold to the Calumet Transportation Co., (Operated by M.A.Hanna Co.) in 1915 and renamed J.J.TURNER. (See illustra- tion, DMH,v.5,no.5). The Calumet fleet was transferred to Producers' Steam- ship Fold a division of the National Steel Corperation,in 1931, at which time the vessel's name was changed to GEORGE R.FINK i. On Beptembor 152 the FINK made local headlines when she ran aground in the Amherstburg Chan- nel. She was refloated and returned to service later in the fall of that yearl Last spring the vessel was renamed THOMAS E.MILLSOP as a result of a general shuffle of names in the Hanna fleet. She ran only this season in Hanna colors. Our illustration show her at the Soo in June. Last November the MILLSOP along with the DAVID M.WEIR (ex EDWARD A UHRIG, ex SHELDON PARKS) were sold to River perio we Inc., a Browning enterprise. The tonnage of@ the THOMAS E.MILLSOP is 6832 gross aha 5376 net, with 11424 short tons cap-— acity. Propulsion by reciprocating engines, 1760 ihp. Coal fired boilers.
