MARINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF DETROIT, INC. ANNOUNCEMENT: Our Society inaugurates its eleventh season with the usual pic- nic and meeting at Amherstburg on Saturday, September llth. In the after- noon and early evening we will have ouring and picnic on the grounds of the | Fort Malden Museum as the guests of Mr.&Mrs.David Botsford. The meeting in the evening, at approximately 8 P.M. will feature Capt.Earl McQueen's latest color movies of his towing and salvage operations. Tentatively, this will be held in the auditorium of nearby Amherstburg High School. Exact information will be given you at the meeting in this regard. Keep this date on your record and look forward to an enjoyable afternoon. Our friends and acquaintances are always welcome to the meetings. OR RK OR KOK OR KR KOK KK KK KK OK OK OK OK OK OK KK KK K KK KK KK KK KOK SHIPS The three freighters purchased early this year by Wyandotte Chemical Co. for eventual conversion to barges, have been renamed as follows: GEN.ORLANDO M.POE is now WY CHEM 104, SAMURL F.B.MORSE is now WY CHEM 105, and ODANAH is WY CHEM 106. They will operate for the remainder of this year with no change other than the removal of their propellor for easier towing. During the winter machinery will be removed and cabins rearranged. The two new canal sized motorships recently launched in England for the Quebec and Ontario fleet will be named BAY COMEAU and MANICOUAGAN (ii). Addition of the two gives Q.&0. a fleet of 11 vessels. (We will run the story of this fleet in the Historian in the near future - Ed.) The new Hall canallers HUTCH- CLIFFE HALL and EASTCLIFFE HALL are in service. The converted freighters R.BRUCE ANGUS (ex IMPERIAL REDWATER) and GOLDEN HIND (ex IMPERIAL WOODBEND) and running, as is the wrecking tug LAWRENCE C.TURNER (ex Mo.15,M.F.D.). ~ The U.S.Submarine GAR, stationed usually at 6leveland, ran aground recently after breaking away from her towing tug enroute from the shipyards at Lorafn, and required the efforts of five tugs to refloat her. The Pittsburgh carrier AUGUST ZIESING will be repowered next winter at Bay City. As of July 16, some 66 ore carriers were laid up, GEO.F.RAND (ex WM.C.AGNEW) is now BEN W.CALVIN.
