(From a colored postcard) PART I The Great Lakes Towing Company was organized in 1899 in an effort to provide reliable tug service at the important American harbors on the lakes. Taken into the new company were the fleets of the Dunham Towing & Wrecking Co., The Barry Tug Line, the Hand & Johnson Tug Line, The Ma$them Téwing Co., The Sandusky Tug Line, The Thompson Towing & Wrecking Co., The Inman Towing Co., The Union Towing Co and the Vessel Owners' Towing Co. as well as many other tugs owned either by smaller towing outfits, or railroads, osteamship lines, docks, etc.,etc. A total of nearly 200 tugs, mostly wooden “edulls, were thuswise assembled. The fleet colors adopted in 1899 were the : same as those used today, namely dark green hulls, dark red cabins and black stack with large white "G" on the sides. The first part of this article will list tugs known to have been involved in the original company. Following that we will enumerate the tugs purchased later or built by the company. Continued, p.3
