SHIPS THAT NEVER ae (#68) - - - AMPANA, iron ae screw ship built at Glasgow in 1873. 1278 g. t.,c.250 x 40. 2 masts with sail rig & one stack. Operated as a cattle carrier between the Un- ited Kingdom & S.America and S. Africa until she was bought by Canadian inter- ests in 1881.She had to be cut in two at Montreal, the first such operation there. In November 1881 she arrived at Collingwood. She had the looks of a tramp ship then, but dur- ing the winter cabins were added and she entered serfice in the spring of 1882, running in conjunction with the FRANCES SMITH and CITY OF OWEN SOUND. The three ships gave a semi-weekly service between Georgian Bay ports and Lake Superior. The CAMPANA was known as "the iron boat" since she was the first all iron hull in the Canadian lake trade. The earlier CHICORA has an iron hull but the CAMPANA was iron up to the promenade deck. When the CPR @ steamer ALGOMA was wrecked in 1885 the CAMPANA was chartered to take her place, and continued in CPR service until the new MANITOBA arrived in 1889. CAMPANA was then taken over by the Béatty Line of Sarnia and operated out of that port to L.Superior for several years. In 1895 she was sold to the Que- bec Steamship Co to run between Montreal and Pictou, N.S. She was cut in two again and reassembled at Montreal. On june 17, 1909 she went aground a few miles below Quebec and broke in two at the place where she had been joined together the second time. Her original name, while on the ocean, was NORTH.
