c THE "LAKERS" OF WORLD WAR I, Continued from first page: The first of the true "Lakers" was a group of 26 ships contracted for by the Lamport and Holt Line of Great Britain very shortly before America's entry into World War I. They bore names whose first word was "WAR." While they were under construction our Conntry joined the Allied Cause, and they were taken over by the U.S.Shipping Board, and their design was used for the 200 or more subsequent vessels built in 1917 and 1918. Some of these "WAR" ships were renamed with "LAKE" names, as were the majority of the group which followed. Herewith is a list of the "WAR" group (1917-18). As stated above, most were names with "LAKE" titles, said to have been selected by Mrs.Woodrow Wilson. However, there was a large group with names beginning with "C" also many ships named for municipalities and counties which had been a in the male of Liberty Bonds.
