PS THAT NEVER DIE (#77) » (US 211085). For many years widely acclaimed as the "Great Ship” or "The Largest Sidewheel Steamer in the World." She was the third and ee ship built for the Cleveland & Buffalo Transit Company. Frank E.Kirby was her design- er. Launched in Noven- ber 1912 at the Wyan- dotte yards of the Det- roit Shipbuilding Co. Steel hull, and inclined steam engines of 11,000 h.p. Coal fired boilers. Two masts and four stacks. Her listed dimensions are 500 ft length 0.8, 98'6" beam, 23'7" depth 6381 gross & 3434 net tons. She:had 510 staterooms and 24 parlors ané could sleep 1500 passengers or carry 6000 day passengers. She had a total of seven decks. Her hull was painted green and her cabins glistening white. She cut through the water at 22 knots. A truly remarkable ship. SEEANDBEE Met cr regular ivernight service between Cleveland and Buffalo in 1913. In she began a post-season to Mackinac and the Soo Locks, which in putin cea 9 years was extended to Chicago. (Our photo shows her at Mackinac Island, 9='2 on the first of these special trips.) - 1937 she was damaged slightly when fire destroyed her sister ship CITY JUFFALO, at the Cleveland docks (See DMH v.9,no.5). Later she became a aeuian cruise ship operating between Buffalo and Palicens and way ports. In 1941 she was sold to the C.& B.Tran- sit Co. of Illinois. World War II brought drastic changes to In 1942 the U.S.Navy took her over and converted her, at Buffalo, into an air- fraft carrier training ship. All superstructure above the main deck was re- moved. She was renamed WOLVERINE and stationed at Chicago until the end of the War. She fitted no further commercial purpose now, and so in November of 1947 she was taken to Milwaukee where she was scrapped (See DMH v.1,no.4).
