SHIPS THAT NEVER DIE (#86) RESCUE - Twin screw wooden freighter, built at Buffalo in 1855. Dimensions 123.5 x 28 x 10, 285 gross tons. According to the Lytle List she had no known U. S.registry num- ber. Her home port was Buffalo until 1858. In that year she was purchased by Captain James Dick and other Toronto citizens who organized the Northwest Trading and Colonization Company. RESCUE then was registered Canadian, #33528. The vessel was fitted with passenger ac- commodations, and sailed from Collingwood on July 12, 1958 with passengers, mail and freight. Passing through the Soo Locks the next day, she became the first registered Canadian steamer to navigate Lake Superior. She ar- rived outside the river mouth bar off Fort William on July 15th. On the following morning she proceeded to the Grand Portage where the mail was put in a canoe and eventually delivered to the Red River Settlement over the old fur trade route. The RESCUE continued in this service until 1874, but i ee ta es after 1864 from the sidewheeler ALGOMA (ex RACINE, ex CITY OF TORONTO,1839), operated by the Lake Sypperior Royal Mail Line. In 1874 the RESCUE was sold to the St.Lawrence Steam Navigation Company and taken to Montreal. She was dismantled in 1877 and her registry closed.
