The ships used were owned individually, not by a company. This method of opera- tion continued until 1868 when the Detroit and Cleveland Steam Navigation Company was incorporated. In the early years of the present century the company's name was officially changed to Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company. Prominent names in the incorporation of 1868 were John Owen and David Carter. A few years later Sen. James McMillan became a stockholder. Possibly the best remembered personality in D.& C. was the late Augustus Schantz, for many years the General Manager. The vessels which sailed in this century-long service are listed below in approximate cnronological order: All vessels are sidewheelers. SOUTHERNER, 1847 Monroe, 550 tons, 170 ft.long. On Detroit-Cleveland line,1850-1852 incl. Stranded near Ashtabula, 0.,10-18-53. BALTIMORE, 1847 Monroe, 513 tons, 170 ft. On D-C. run 1850-1852. Lost by stranding near Sheboygan, Wis. ,9-17-55. FOREST CITY, 1852 Trenton, Mich. 479 tons, c.160 ft. On Detroit-Cleveland line, 1853, 54. Later named BAY CITY & abandoned in 1862. ST.LOUIS, 1844 Perrysburg, Ohio. 618 tons. In fleet in 1852. Wrecked near Sandusky, Ohio, 11-33-52. MAY QUEEN, 1853 Trenton, Mich. 688 tons. In fleet until 1864 when sold 7 to A.E.Goodrich Steamboat Line. Stranded near Sheboygan,Wis. 8-1865. Engines later in MANITOWOC and CHICAGO. SAMUEL WARD, 1847 Newport, Mich. 433 tons. On Detroit-Cleveland line,1853- 1861. Cut down to a sailing vessel in 1861 OCEAN, 1850 Newport, Mich. 1052 tons. On Detroit-Cleveland line 1855-1862. Cut down to sailing vessel in 1862.
