Williams sidewheeler, built in 1871 by Melanchthon Simpson at Port Robinson for the Lake Superior Navigation Co., a subsidiary of the Northern Railway, and named for Fred W. Cumberland, general manager of the railway. Her white hull, superstructure and cabins were as ” shown in photo. Her vertical beam engine was trans- ferred from the Canadian steamer COLUMBIA (ex U.S.CATARACT) and was built by H.R. Dunham and Co., New York, with a cylinder 44" diameter by 11' stroke. On Aug. 6, 1877, she arrived at Fort William from Collingwood after calling at Michipicoten Island’ s north shore Bonner Mine where nickel ‘and silver minerals were associated with copper ore. From there she followed the north shore course and made calls at Peninsula Harbour (He- ron Bay), Jackfish, Silver Islet and Her dimensions were: 204" 5" X 26 xX 10" 7", 418 g.te She cleared Fort William for Du- luth and in broad daylight struck an uncharted submerged reef extending westward from the islet later known as Rock of Ages. She remained fast and after several days of unsuccess- ful attempts at salvage was abandon- ed. A storm broke her up and her registry was closed on Aug.2h, 1877. The 461-ton sidewheeler FRANCE SMITH (1819 8" xX 27! 9" xX 11" 9m) took the CUMBERLAND's crew back to Collingwood and arrived on Aug. 9.
