WILSON Photo by Haseltine On Wednesday, April 22, 1959, the nationts first guided-missile des- troyer, the USS HENRY B, WILSON, was launched at the Defoe Shipbuilding Co. at Bay City, Mich., the largest warship (438 X 47) ever built on the Lakes, Last month's picture of the RALEIGH of Saginaw-Bay City Steamship Co. prompted considerable response. Capt. H. M. Gates, of Ludington, recalled her and that her skipper was Capt. Gordon Rattray. C. Bradford Mitchell, of Brooklyn, N.Y. recalled her as the MARION of the Colonial Line and fur- nished her history as told in Alexander Crosby Brown's "Qld Bay Line." Fr. Dowling had her history together with the fact that the illustration was by Antonio Jacouson, painter of American coastwise vessels who did a few of the Great Lakes boats as well. Lester Bartson III, of Plymouth, Mich., had her complete history. Keith F. Smith, of Saginaw, sent along photostats from the Saginaw News, telling of her brief service on the Lakes. Briefly, this is her history -- steel, screw freighter, built 1906 Sparrows Point, Md., oy Marylend Shipouilding for 3altimore Steam Packet Co. (The Old Bay Line). Dimensions: 222 X 33 X 21, 1185 g.t., 805 n.t. Cost $132,914. Sold 1924 to Saginaw-Bay City Steamship Co., Charles W. Stiver, president. Op- erated Saginaw, Bay City, Harbor Beach, Port Huron, Detroit and Cleveland. Gr the conclusion of the 1925 season, the RALEIGH went down the Mississippi iver to salt water for service between Miami and Jacksonville. Under the Colonial Navigation Co., of New York she was renamed MARION. She was listed under Philippine registry in 1940 and that's the last anyone knew avout it.
