FOR YOUR LIBRARY Introduction to the Great Lakes and the St.Lawrence Seaway by Frederick Lb, Whitlark, Amery, Wis., Great Takes Books, Ince, 1959. 28 pages plus index. 23 pages of line drawings and 95 photographs. $3.95. Dr. Whitlark's readable and informative account has been well ree ceived by cruise passengers and visitors to the Great Lakes region for whom it is primarily intended. The book departs from the historical format of previous Great Lakes "primers" and provides instead a broad elementary survey of the operation of the Great Lakes ships and the processing of their cargoes. Of more universal value is the second half of the book,a guide to waterways and landmarks of the Great Lakes and St.Lawrence system. Whitlark provides a pictorial section with a generous and broad selection of vessel types and landmarks. Those buying the book for its photographs will find the quality of them is not good, but this does not mar their educational value. Explanatory Qg line drawings are scattered throughout the text.
