THE LOG Pelee Shipping Ltd's PELEE ISLANDER began service on western Lake Erie early this season. The new 15-foot motor vessel was built at Erieau, Ont., and replaces the PELEE. THEODORUS A., sold at public auction at Detroit last December in settlement of creditors' claims, passed downbound through the Seaway in mid-June as the MACUTO. She was halted at Montreal for failure to have paid tolls on her inward voyage. Former Buckeye barge MANILA passed downbound at Detroit on Aug. 5 in tow of tug PINE, reportedly enroute to Jacksonville with grain. OUT, (a. BRULEN), sold by Quebec and Ontario Transportation to Buckport Shipping Ltd. and renamed JAMES J. BUCKLER, ran aground on Red Island Shoal in the St.Lawrence near the Saguenay on Aug. 8 while on her first trip under new ownership. She has been abandoned to the underwriters. Bury Court Shipping Ltd's ALEXANDER T. WOOD and Nordlake Line's MARIA collided off Ballard Reef in the Detroit River on Aug. 13. The MARIA suffered substantial hull and superstructure damage. The WOOD grounded after the mishap and was refloated only after partial grain cargo remov: naiigftecting: substantially reduced ore demands, only 159 vessels of he 231 American lake bulk fleet were in service at mid-August. Carryore's CAROL LAKE was christened at Collingwood Shipyards on Sept. 1. Vessel entered service immediately, passing downbound at Port Colborne two days later. JONES (a.D.G.KERR) downbound through the Welland Canal Sept. 16. The former Cargo Carriers! laker will be dismantled at Newcastle. Former Canadian Dept. of Transport steamer ST.HELIERS has been sold to Wallaceburg, Ont. interests for service between that port and the Windsor area. The Glasgow-built vessel, stationed in the Midland area for 3h years, was replaced by the new ALEXANDER HENRY. McNamara Marine Ltd's sand dredge SIDNEY M. (a.O'CONNOR DICK) has been scrapped at Toronto. She will be replaced in that firm's fleet by the canaller CHARLES R. HUNTLEY, purchased from Upper Lakes Ship- ping in July. CSL's CUMOUNT (a.DALRYMPLE) is currently being dismantled at Ham- Ailton. She follows the BARRIE (a.ROBERT P. KERNAN) to the Stelco furn- aces. Late reports indicate two other former CSL package freighters, CALGARIAN (a.GLENELLAH) and BEAVERTON have arrived at Hamilton for scrapping. (Continued on Page 3) ©
