The LOG Bullhorn CSL's new 730-foot motorship SA- GUENAY passed upbound through the Welland Canal Aug. 17 on her maid- en voyage. She carried 25,469 g.t. of natural iron ore from Sept Iles to Cleveland, a record ore cargo ever loaded inte a Great Lakes or Seaway bulker. The ore was trans- shipped by rail to mills in the Weirton, W.Va., area. From Cleve- land, SAGUENAY went to Ashtabula where she took on 28 3252 not. of coal for Hamilton, ont. an all- time record for this cargo. She cleared then for Fort Willian, where she loaded 945,597 bushels of wheat for Montreal, a record for that commodity. Alloys and plastic piping coupled with re- duced engineroom space have com- bined to give this laker added cargo space. McNamara Construction of Manitoba, Ltd., began work on the New Poe Lock at the Soo on Aug. 7. The J. W. Westcott Co., closed its Amherstburg, Ont., reporting of- fice permanently Aug. 15, citing rising costs for discontinuance. The firm's former Port Huron of- fice was torn down during the week of July 13. Shipyard Shavings Collingwood Shipyards has been a- warded a contract to build a 639- foot diesel-propelled self-unload- er for Algoma Central and Hudson Bay Railway Co. Now HULL 186, she is scheduled for completion late in the 1965 navigation season. The same shipyard will construct a 730-foot diesel bulk carrier for Canada Steamship Lines. Now HULL 181, she is slated for delivery early in 1965. Upper Lakes Shipping, Ltd., is said to be considering construct- ion of a 730-foot bulk carrier at Port Weller Dry Docks, Ltd.
