She was laid down on Sept. 22, 1964, launched April 24 and delivered May 21 as the fifth Fort-class package freighter for CSL. While preparing to discharge cargo in the early morning of Sept. 17, she rolled over on her starboard side, caught fire and sank at Pier 65, Montreal Harbour. Five lives were lost. Improper loading has been blamed for the accident. Foundation Maritime, Ltd., has undertaken salvage with rebuild sche- duled at Davie Shipbuilding, Lauzon. This photo was taken as FORT WILLIAM was eastbound in the Seaway just hours prior to her fatal docking at Montreal.
