The stern section was built at Vickers’ Montreal yard while the 245’ bow section was built by the subsidiary George T. Davie yard at Levis, Que. The stern section was launched Dec. 9, 1964, and towed to Levis for joining in the Cham- plain drydock at the Davie yard. The completed vessel, 730’ x 75’ x 39’, 17,574 g.t.; 12,529 n.t., was formally christened at Montreal June 9, 1965. Under charter to Papachristidis Co., Ltd., she commen- ced operations in July as flagship of the fleet. Propulsion system consists of a 9,000-h.p, General Electric steam turbine, steam being supplied by two oil-fired water tube boilers. DON DE DIEU is a name important in Canadian history. Meaning “Gift of God,” it was the name selected by Champlain for his vessel in the early 1600’s.
