Mild THE LOOKOUT As the 1966 season begins it seems appropriate’ that we review both the American and Canadian lake fleets for significant changes. It is hoped that LOOKOUT, which for this issue only replaces the LOG, Will add to our members' interest in and enjoyment of the parade of commerce on our Inland Seas. American Steamship's fleet takes on greater capacity with the leng- thening last winter of the DETROIT EDISON by 72' to 678' (OA) at Fra- ser Shipyards and JOSEPH S. YOUNG by 84' to 673' (OA) at American Ship, South Chicago. Bethlehem Steel will fit out all units except LACKAWANNA at the be- ginning of the season. Their STEELTON this year is the former FRANK PURNELL of the Interlake fleet, traded last winter. Recent- ly sold for eventual dismantling were Bethlehem's LEONARD C. HANNA and POWELL STACKHOUSE, laid up at Erie for the past six seasonse Buckeye Steamship has extended for three more years its charter of Tomlinson's JAMES DAVIDSON. Canada Steamship Lines will-.place the Davie-built 730' self-unloader MANITOULIN and 730' bulker SIMCOE, building at Collingwood, in ser- vice. The explosion-ravaged FORT WILLIAM returns to the ranks fol- lowing rebuild at Davieship. King- sten Shipyards reboilered the self-unloader MIDLAND PRINCE and converted METIS to a cement car- rier this past winter, replacing GLENELG, which will be scrapped. Canadian Pacific, through with its Great Lakes passenger service, will operate ASSINIBOIA in freight service only with KEEWATIN now for sale. Cleveland-Cliffs have disposed of the steamers ISHPEMING and LASALLE to Upper Lakes Shipping. Columbia will fit out all except the long-idle bulker HOWARD M. HANNA JR. and craneship 0.S.MCFAR- LAND, adding the self-unloaders HURON and WYANDOTTE, acquired from Wyandotte Transportation last win- ter. Erie Sand's ALPENA will be operated by Columbia this season. The J.H.HILLMAN JR. returns to the Wilson fleet after six years in Columbia charter. Ford Motor Company will add JOSEPH S. WOOD this spring, purchased from Northwestern Mutual Life Ins- urance earlier this year. She will be renamed. Gartland Steamship continues char- ter of Columbia's J.CLARE MILLER and has sold WILLIAM H. WOLF for scrape The WOLF has been inopera- tive the past two seasonse Hall Corporation will add the new 730". bulker MAPLECLIFFE HALL in late April, completing at Vickers, Montreal. LAWRENCECLIFFE HALL has been raised, towed to Davieship at Lauzon in mid-March for recondi- tioning and is expected back in service by mid-season.
