In July our Society wrote Senators Griffin and Hart, encouraging their influence to postpone effective date of such regula- tions until November, 1968. The old laker has served in grain storage at Buffalo for some years. SHIPYARD SHAVINGS Canadian Vickers, Ltd., will build a 730-foot self-unloader of unique design for Scott Misener Steamships, Ltd. To be propelled by a 9,600-hp Sulzer diesel, the laker will be equipped with. two 1,000-hp thrusters, one at the bow and a second at the stern, a Kort steering nozzle instead of a conventional rudder, a bulbous bow and rail-mounted self—un- loading equipment which scoops cargo by bucket chain from hold to deck level for dis- charge via athwartships belt. Keel will be laid in April for Spring, 1968, delivery. In October, Fraser Shipyards, Superior, began refit of the Pittsburgh Fleet's 600-foot steamer WILLIAM B. SCHILLER, which had laid idle at Duluth since June 16, 1960. Re-entry into service was prompted by the Oct. 22 grounding of the GEORGE A. SLOAN near Mackinac Island. Refloated with aid of the C.G. Cutter MACKINAW, the SLOAN will be converted this winter at Fraser Shipyards to self-unloader and will then be transferred to Bradley Fleet. American Ship Building sent the jumboized U.S.Navy tanker PAWCATUCK (AO-108) on trials off Lorain Nove 5. lLengthened almost 100 feet to 645 feet, she was scheduled to depart on Nove 19 to rejoin the Navy, marking the end of a program in which Amership enlarged three oilers for U.S.Navy. Collingwood Shipyards set Nov. 23 to launch HULL 187, a 607° 9" diesel-powered straight- deck bulker for N.M.Paterson & Sons, Ltd. She will be christ- ened MANTADOC ii. St.John Shipbuilding and Dry- dock, St.John, N.B., has con— tracted to build a 730-foot diesel for Mohawk Navigation Coe, Ltd. To be similar in de- sign to Mohawk's SILVER ISLE with all cabins aft, the laker is scheduled to enter service next fall. She is designated HULL 77. SWAPS & SALES Gartland Steamship Company has sold the ex-Army tug MUSKEGON (aeL.T.820) to Bultema Dock & Dredge Co., Manistee, which has had the unit under charter for over a year. Frank Becker Towing Co's. tug CENTRAL, idle at Delray for some years, has been sold to Port Everglades Towing Co. She cleared Detroit Oct. 17 with
