by Neuman Boat Lines is under construction by Blount Marine at Warren, R.I. CSL's WHITEFISH BAY is being converted to a_ self-unloader of a new design at Port Arthur this winter. The 437-foot forward section of the new 858-foot self-unloader under construction at American Shipbuilding's Lorain yard for U.S.Steel was floated out of the drydock on Dec. 21. Indusmin, Ltd., has taken over the old shipyard at Midland, Ont., and the site will be made into a mineral-processing plant by spring. In late December first steel was cut at Erie Marine, Erie, for the midbody of the new 1000- footer for Bethlehem, The bow and stern for this vessel are being built by Ingallas Ship- building at Pascagoula, Miss., and when finished will be joined and sail into the Lakes as a “mini-vessel" which will be cut apart and joined to the Erie midbody. SWAPS & SALES GASPEDOC (a.LST 885) was renamed VEDALIN by Steel Factors last year. However, following her sale to Challenger, Ltd., she was renamed WITSHOAL. She now flies the Panamanian flag and is apparently in service somewhere south of the U. S. Mohawk's BELVOIR was sold to Pe- ruvian interests on Nov. 8 and has left the Lakes. A.G.BRECKLING has been sold to the Erie Sand fleet. Reportedly she is at Erie being reconveeted to a cement carrier for service between Detroit and Cleveland this coming season. The cement carrier BULKARIER was sold to J.D.Irving, Ltd. in late “mmer o CSL has reportedly sold STADA- CONA to Reoch's Westdale Ship- ping, Ltd. She will enter ser- vice as NORDALE. THE STRAITS OF MACKINAC, last of the steam ferries at the Straits was towed from Cheboygan Nov. 11 Reports indicated she was pur- chased by Peterson Builders and will be used as living quarters for workers at their Sturgeon Bay shipyard. SCRAPS Tugs GRAEME STEWART and G.W.ROG- ERS towed BUCKEYE (a.DAVID M. WHITNEY, b.EDWIN L. BOOTH, c. G. N.WILSON, d.THOMAS BRITT) down the Welland on Dec. 14, bound for Kingston where BUCKEYE will winter before her final trip to Europe next spring. The long-inactive sidewheel fer- ry TRILLIUM is being cut down to a barge at Toronto, Two CSL ‘veterans, COLLINGWOOD and HAGARTY (a.J.H.HAGARTY) ar- rived in tandem tow at Santander Spain on Oct. 28. At Ashtabula RENVOYLE (a.GLEN- LEDI) is being cut down toa barge for Empire Marine Co., of Erie. The tugs LAURENCE C, TURNER and OKLAHOMA towed BEN E. TATE (a. PANAY, b.WILLIAM NELSON) into Marine Salvage's Port Colborne scrapyard on Dec. HOWARD M. HANNA JR. was towed down the Seaway on Nov.21 by the tugs GRAEME STEWART and HEL- EN MCALLISTER.
