The Detroit " Marine Historian Journal of Marine Historical Society of Detroit Volume 22, No. 8 April, 1969 Over the years the U. S. Coast Guard has built many vessels on the Great Lakes, both for service on the Lakes and the seas. Several years ago the Coast Guard received authorization to build a new class of cutter for service in the coastal waters of the United States, This class was to be compact, modern, fast and economical. The early model experimented with a new propulsion concept for use in larger vessels, using diesels for cruising and gas turbines for high-speed runs. Later vessels of the class, though, were built as straight diesels. Christy Corp., of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., built the earlier "Co-Dag" version and American Ship Building built the later straight diesels. This month the seventh and last of the class was delivered to the Coast Guard -- U.S.C.G.C. VIGOROUS. J. Albin Jackman Rick Wright will present our program May 17 at 7 pem.
