CLARKE, flagship of U. S. Steel's Great Lakes Fleet. Aboard the CLARKE as special guest and "Adviser to the Master," was our member, Capt. Thomas Small, 95, of the Soo. Capt. Small was wheelsman on the COLGATE HOYT when the federal government opened the first Poe Lock in 1896 and HOYT was the first ore carrier through. There was a further connection. The Master of the CLARKE is Capt. George H. Ashby -- whose father once served as wheelsman under Capt. Small! First vessel downbound in the New Poe Lock was Canada Steamship Lines' SIMCOE, followed by Huron Cement's J.A.W. IGLEHART. First "salty" through was the Nor- wegian freighter ANINA. Nine commercial and two Coast Guard vessels went through that first day, with a total of 103,274 tons of cargo. In the McArthur Lock at the left is the Coast Guard's MACKINAW,
