Back to the Ol’ Drawing Board! Barge L.A. LEARMONTH Photo by Robert W. Walton. Another great idea went down the drain on Aug. 22 when the barge LEARMONTH sank in ice near Bathurst Island in the Arctic while under tow of the IRVING BURCH. She's the one with the Alexbow for icebreaking, built in 1968 at Port Arthur for Panarctic Oil, Ltd. The special bow was intended to rip up ice but trials last winter on the Lakes were not considered very satisfactory. Still she was taken to the Arctic to see how she'd work there. Now they know! Our January meeting will be on the 10% at the Dossin-Great Lakes Museum on Belle Islé with Robert Angwall, of Marinette, a professional pilot, talking on "Ships That I Have Delivered Through the St. Lawrence Seaway." We'll be looking for you. MARINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF DETROIT OFFICERS President-R. Warren McNab, 8337 Glengary, Grosse Ile. 48138 Vice President-Edward J.
