Salute to a Beloved Lady Photo by Robert A. Zeleznik ASSINIBOIA was launched at Fairfields, Govan, Scotland, on June 25, 1907, and was sponsored by Mrs. G. M. Bosworth whose husband was Vice President of Canadian Pacific. The ASSINIBOIA crossed the Atlantic Ocean on her own power to Montreal. Due to limitations of the old St. Lawrence Canal, she was cut in two for the canals and then rejoined on Lake Erie. The ASSINIBCIA had a largely uneventful career running first between Owen Sound and the Lakehead and later in 1912 between Port McNicoll and the Lakehead. On June 9, 1909, the ASSINIBOIA was involved in a weird accident at the Canadian Soo jock when the PERRY G. WALKER hit the lower gate and released Lake Superior waters. The ASSINIBOIA shot through the lock, followed by CRISCENT CITY. Before the affair ended, CRESCENT CITY passed ASSINIBOIA and all three ships suffered damage. The Marine Historical Society enjoyed cruises on this fine ship beginning in 1958 and continuing annually through 1964. Af- ter the 1965 season she carried only freight and on Nov. 26, 1967, she arrived at Port McNicoll to end her service for the Canadian Pacific, as well ag all Great Lakes service for CP. On May 19, 1968, she was sold to Jal Steamship Line and was towed to Sarnia by the McQueen tug AMHERSTBURG, arriving there on June 27, 1968. After spending a short time at Sarnia steam was up again and the ASSINIBOIA cruised again out of the Lakes, into the Atlantic Ocean and to West Deptford Township, New Jersey. There on Nov. 9 and 10, 1969, she burned and on Jan. 20, 1970, she was towed to a Bordentown, New Jersey, scrapyard by the tug HICKORY. : Bowes
