Our Readers Report Remember the mystery photo of the LEMOYNE at Kingston Elevator in the May "Historian"? Thanks to our alert readers, we now know the facts about it. Nels Wilson, of Kingston, has perhaps the most complete account so let's let him tell it. On Aug. 6, 1932, the LEMOYNE officially opened the (new) Wel- land Canal and on this same trip Aug. 8, 1932, she officially opened the grain elevator at Kingston, where she discharged 532,556 bu. of grain. The unloading time was 17 hrs. 20 min- utes. The photo sent the Historian by Mr. McQueen was taken at that time. This was not her maiden voyage as she was launched in 1926 and her length would not permit her to pass through the (old) Welland Canal. On Oct. 24, 1968, the LEMOYNE arrived Kingston Elevator (DMH Vol. 22, No. 5) for the last time. She discharged a_ load of grain and then laid up for the season. She left Kingston under her own power April, 1969, for Quebec City. A few days later she was towed overseas for scrapping. The tug that can be seen alongside the LEMOYNE was the steam tug RIVAL and was owned by the Sin-Mac Tug Line. She was on station at Kingston for about 25 years and became part of McAllister Towing Co. fleet when this comoany bought the for- mer company several years ago. The LEMOYNE was named after LEMOINE'S POINT, the summer resi- dence of the Coverdale family of C.S.L. interest. Does any member know why the difference in spelling? Special thanks to Mr. N. N. Young, superintendent, Kingston Grain Elevator Co., for the above information. And thanks to Nels Wilson for this account and to these others who came forward with the facts: Dick McCollam, of Toronto; Jack Boylan, of Sarnia, and Jim Cameron, of Kingston.
