vd © POOLE COLLECTION VESSEL INFORMATION The John E, Poole Collection consists of several thousand 3 x 5 cards filled with ship data generally covering the period 1830-1880. Most of the material has come from newspapers though other sources have been used. The collection is housed with the Northwest Ohio-Great Lakes Research Center at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. No. 1 W.F.P. TAYLOR - SIDEWHEEL STEAMER Built at Silver Creek, N.Y., in 1835 - 95 tons. Hall List of Shipping (1872): Once burned ~ afterward wrecked on Lake Michigan, 1842. TA (Detroit Advertiser?) (June 11, 1869): A boat called W.F.P. Taylor was built at Silver Creek in 1835. High pressure engine and plied between Buffalo and Barcelona in command of Capt. O. D. Simons, afterward by Capt. Thos. Richards and others. She was partially burn- ed at Cattaraugus (N.Y.) in fall, 1836, and rebuilt. In 1838 she was purchased by John Vail and taken to Lake Michigan. She was wrecked at Michigan City. Detroit Free Press (April 11, 1858): W.F.P. Taylor having been partially burned in fall of 1836 at mouth of Cattaraugus with loss of one man who jumped overboard and was drowned was wrecked at Michigan City in 1838. * Can anyone explain the meaning in Poole's notes of "TA"? eee Our May meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, May 20 at the Sarnia Public Library.
