The Detroit Marine Historian Journal of Marine Historical Society of Detroit Volume 25, No. 10 13951 Faust, Detroit, Michigan 48223 June, 1972 Photo by Ed Haun es Sriead n the early-morning hours of June 5 the SIDNEY E. SMITH JR., was upbound under the Blue Water Bridge between Port Huren F249 and Sarnia with 6,200 tons of coal for Lime Island when the current caught her and shoved her into the path of the downbound PARKER EVANS. What happened next is unclear and to be the subject of court action but the SMITH went down and rolled over on her side. On June 22 the bow broke off and sank in the channel. Erie Sand aban- doned her and the Corps of Engineers turned the salvage over to the Navy. Meanwhile there is one-way traffic past the wreck scene.
