SIMONS in the Environ- mental Protection Agency al- though the 24-year-old Roger R. Simons, of Coleman, Mich., was drowned in 1970 in the Mississippi River near St. Louis, Mo. The engine on the small boat from which he and two companions were taking water samples failed and the boat was swept by the current under a barge. But the young man’s name is now carried on an EPA research vessel on the Great Lakes. It is the old Coast Guard buoy tender MAPLE that has been refitted for her scientific role. The rechris- tening was done by Simons’ mother in the Detroit River at Detroit’s Cobo Hall.
