Roberts ooo0o0 The Great Lakes News Letter of the Ann Arbor-based Great Lakes Com— mission reports that the STEWART J. CORT and ROGER BLOUGH both sub- stantially topped the old record of 2 million gross tons to be car- ried by a single freighter during a navigation season. CORT made 40 trips between Taconite Harbor and Burns Harbor carrying a total of 2,283,575 gross tons of iron ore pellets. BLOUGH got in 51 trips be- fore layup, hauling 2,167,985 gross tons of pellets from Lake Super- ior to ports on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. ‘With more and more of the behemoths being built, more and more of the smaller vessels will go for scrap and more and more seamen will end up on the beach. One way to look at it, of course, is that we'll have more Great Lakes marine history to chronical for future years. a
